The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, October 30, 2014 arraigned an undergraduate of the University of Benin, Kenneth Rukewe Ebule before Justice E. F Ikponmwen of an Edo State High Court, sitting in Benin- City on a 6- count charge bordering on forgery, obtaining money by false pretence and possession of fraudulent documents.The accused person allegedly duped Sabine Albert, a German, of the sum of $12, 088, 75 through fraudulent claims.
Rukewe, 30, a final year student of Computer and Statistics at the University of Benin, was arrested by officials of a new generation bank on May 28, 2014 in Benin City and handed over to the EFCC for further investigation.
Troubles started for him when Albert alleged that within two months after he had internet contact with him, Rukewe fraudulently obtained the sum of $12,088,75 (Twelve Thousand Eighty Eight Dollars and Seventy Five Cents) from him.
Rukewe allegedly posed to Albert as an English businessman on transit in Nigeria. He gave his name as Bob Albert and told his victim that he had a contract with a Nigerian company worth €1.200, 000.00 and that he needed a loan to facilitate a transaction with the company. He promised to pay back the loan and even doubled it because he was sure of pulling through the transactions. He also told Albert that he had complications and suffered a robbery attack.
Rukewe also falsely told Albert that, a levy of of N1,975,861 (One Million, Nine Hundred and Seventy Five Thousand, Eight Hundred and Sixty One Naira only) was imposed on him by the Federal Inland Revenue Service for the release of his International Passport, and a cheque worth 1, 200,000 Euros. He also pleaded for a flight ticket to London.
Based on all these, Albert offered to loan him the money by sending it through Western Union, only to discover that he had been scammed.
Investigation also revealed that the suspect had defrauded other German nationals to the tune of $110,975.00USD (One Hundred and Ten thousand, Nine Hundred and Seventy Five United States Dollars) between May 2013 and January 2014.
When the charges were read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty.
One of the charges read in part:
“Ebule Kenneth Rukewe (a.k.a. Bob Albert), on or about the 17th day of July, 2013 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with Intent to defraud, obtained the sum of $12,088,75 (Twelve Thousand Eighty Eight Dollars and Seventy Five Cents) from Sabine Albert (a German National), under the false pretence that the money represented part payment of N1,975,861 (One Million Nine Hundred and Seventy Kobo) levy imposed one Bobby Albert (a British citizen) by Federal Inland Revenue Service for the release of the International Passport, Cheque worth 1,200,000 Euros and flight ticket to London of the said Bobby Albert, which representation you knew to be false”.
In view of the plea of the defendant, prosecution counsel, Kayode Oni asked for a trial date and prayed the court to remand the defendant in prison custody. The defence counsel, Maureen Morka informed the court of her application for bail dated September 9, 2014 and prayed the court to grant the defendant bail.
Justice Ikponmwen granted the defendant bail in the sum of One Million Naira and two sureties in like sum. The sureties must be resident in Benin City and must be gainfully employed in Edo State. The defendant must also produce his student identity card.
Justice Ikponmwen subsequently adjourned the case to November 21, 2014 for hearing and ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody pending the perfection of his bail.

Chibok parents beg Boko Haram to release their daughters
have appealed to the Boko Haram sect to fulfil its promise of releasing their daughters.
They made the appeal in telephone interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN) on Tuesday.
Mr Shettima Haruna, one of the parents of the abducted girls, said they had suffered in silence for the past six months because the abduction.
"We have suffered immensely due to the abduction of our girls by the insurgents.
"Some parents have died due to heart problems caused by the kidnapping of the girls,'' Haruna said.

Mr Solomon Ali, a Chibok Community Leader, said that the abduction had adversely affected the lives of many parents
in the community.
Ali said although government had not formally informed the community of the planned released of the girls, they were happy with the plan.
"The government has not informed us about the expected release of the girls. We only heard the news in the media that the insurgents were willing to release the girls under a ceasefire with the government,'' he said.
Ali said that the community was excited by the media report.
"We began to develop interest in the issue when the media carried the news but we were disappointed that nothing has happened yet.
"Up till this moment nobody has contacted us to say what actually happened.
"Even the local government chairman has no information about the issue, because I spoke with him in the morning,'' he said.
Ali said that the community had resorted to prayers on the issue.
"We have taken our problem to our creator because all human efforts have failed in rescuing our children.
It is only God that has the power to help rescue our girls and we believe he will help us,'' he said.

Lagos bus fire accident claims seven lives
Lagos - Seven passengers including a pregnant woman were burnt to death when their bus went up in flames on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, Vanguard reports.
The bus which was heading to Ibadan from Lagos was said to have suddenly developed leakages on the fuel tank, which spilled its contents resulting in the fire outbreak.
Only eleven passengers were able to escape with various degrees of injury as soon as the fire broke out while others were trapped in the 18-seater bus as the door was jammed.
The bodies and the injured persons were said to have be taken to Ogun State University Teaching Hospital OSUTH, Sagamu.

Unknown Gunmen kill 300-level UNIBEN student on campus
There was pandemonium at the Ugbowo Campus of the University of Benin on Friday when a 300-level student of the Department of Chemistry, Gbenedio Ejyroghene, was gruesomely murdered by unknown gunmen.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Ejyroghene, popularly called “Kazito,” was taking part in a jeans carnival organised for final-year students of the Faculty of Physical Sciences at the 1000-Lecture Theatre field of the faculty when he was shot in the head by the assailants around 7pm.
A source in the institution, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that the late chemistry student was on probation until his death and was often spotted in the final-year class of the department

Lady's ear bitten off during fight with neighbour in Lagos
A Lagos State Polytechnic student named Bola had her right ear bitten
off by her neighbour during a fight this past Monday October 20th at her
residence in Ikorodu. According to an eye-witness to the fight, the

Boko Haram Abducts 60 Women in Adamawa
Nigerian man arrested after jumping over White House fence
A Nigerian man based in Maryland, Dominic Adesanya, (pictured above) has been arrested after jumping the White House Fence. According to police reports, around 7.15pm yesterday Wednesday October 22nd, Adesanya, 23, climbed the fence on the North Lawn of the building and got about 20 yards past the fence before he was taken down by Secret Service and dogs.
He's currently in police custody but is being treated in a hospital for injuries he sustained during the encounter. He was attacked by K.9 dogs. Continue to see photos from the incident...
